You Must Be Born Again!

Matt 10:21 (NIV) "Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death. 22 All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved.

Phil 2:9 (NIV) Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. 12 Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed--not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence--continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose.

I.          We are admonished through scripture that there is effort involved with being saved.

A.    If we do not put effort into our “salvation experience” then we may not have had a life changing experience.

1.      A life changing experience means just that, “It changed your life!”

a.       When God comes in and take up residency within a person (a temple) it is because He is giving confirmation of His blessing, the dwelling has an unlocked door, and everything is now prepared for cleansing and renovation.    Is this you?

(1.) You will not stand firm until the end if you are not standing on the “Rock” first (Jesus is the Rock).

(2.) You will not work out your salvation if you have not really been saved in the first place or you have not approached God through a fearful understanding of His majesty and holiness.

(3.) You will not tremble in fearful expectation of retribution if you have not seen your sin as terrible and dirty as it was and may be.

B.     You will put effort into your salvation if you know and believe that God “does” live in you to both will and “do” for His good pleasure.

1.      You see, if there is no real knowledge, which comes from a “real” born-again experience that God lives in you, you will not act accordingly.

2.      Real knowledge of God in you only comes when you have died to self, put on a new life, which is granted by God, and then live in that newness of life.

II.                 Becoming Born-again, “death.”

Roma 10:8 (NIV) But what does it say? "The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart," that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming: 9 That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. 11 As the Scripture says, "Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame." 12 For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile--the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."

Luke 8:11 (NIV) "This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God. 12 Those along the path are the ones who hear, and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. 13 Those on the rock are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away. 14 The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life's worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature. 15 But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop.

A.      Responding to the “Word” or message about salvation, God’s love, and God’s call to holiness is the “word” that brings you to salvation.

1.      The message about salvation is the message that every human is a sinner (you are included), and can be saved if they will repent (turn from sin and to God.)   Roma 3:22 (NIV) This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. 25 God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished-- 26 he did it to demonstrate his justice at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.

2.      The message about salvation (or being born-again) is not a matter of just mentally accepting the truth about sin and redemption it is about obedience to that truth.   Matt 7:21 (NIV) "Not everyone who says to me, `Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

Luke 6:46 (NIV) "Why do you call me, `Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say? 47 I will show you what he is like who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice. 48 He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. 49 But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete."

1Pet 1:14 (NIV) As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. 15 But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16 for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy."

B.      You must die (repent) to self-will (which became your god) and surrender to God’s will by making Jesus Lord of your life.

III.       Becoming born-again, “burial.”

    A.     After we have repented (died to self-will) we must put off the old person (the old boss of self-will who listened to Satan, the old master) and take on the new life with a new master, the Lord Jesus.

        1.      The means of being buried is through water baptism.   Roma 6:3 (NIV) Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.

Acts 2:38 (NIV) Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Colo 2:11 (NIV) In him you were also circumcised, in the putting off of the sinful nature, not with a circumcision done by the hands of men but with the circumcision done by Christ, 12 having been buried with him in baptism and raised with him through your faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead.

IV.              Becoming Born-again, “resurrection.”

Roma 6:3 (KJS)  Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? 4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also [in the likeness] of [his] resurrection:

A.     When God receives you as His own, He gives evidence of that acceptance by baptism you with in the Holy Spirit.

Ephe 1:13 (NIV) And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession--to the praise of his glory.

Acts 10:42 (NIV) He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one whom God appointed as judge of the living and the dead. 43 All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name." 44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message. 45 The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles. 46 For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God. Then Peter said, 47 "Can anyone keep these people from being baptized with water? They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have." 48 So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked Peter to stay with them for a few days.

Acts 11:16 (NIV) Then I remembered what the Lord had said: `John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.' 17 So if God gave them the same gift as he gave us, who believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to think that I could oppose God?" 18 When they heard this, they had no further objections and praised God, saying, "So then, God has granted even the Gentiles repentance unto life."

1.      The presence of the Holy Spirit gives evidence that you have been forgiven, accepted, and born-again.

2.      Being born-again gives you access to the things of God, the ways of God, and life eternal.

John 3:1 (NIV) Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish ruling council. 2 He came to Jesus at night and said, "Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with him." 3 In reply Jesus declared, "I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again." 4 "How can a man be born when he is old?" Nicodemus asked. "Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother's womb to be born!" 5 Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. 7 You should not be surprised at my saying, `You must be born again.' 8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit." 9 "How can this be?" Nicodemus asked. 10 "You are Israel's teacher," said Jesus, "and do you not understand these things? 11 I tell you the truth, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony. 12 I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? 13 No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven--the Son of Man.  14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, 15 that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.  16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.  19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."

Mark 9:43 (NIV) If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go into hell, where the fire never goes out. 44  45 And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than to have two feet and be thrown into hell. 46  47 And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell, 48 where "`their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.'

Luke 12:5 (NIV) But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after the killing of the body, has power to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him. 6 Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. 7 Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. 8 "I tell you, whoever acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man will also acknowledge him before the angels of God. 9 But he who disowns me before men will be disowned before the angels of God. 10 And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.

"The Lordship Of Christ"

 Take the Quiz: Quiz-Lordship.txt

Hebr 6:1 (NIV) Therefore let us leave the elementary teachings about Christ...

Introduction:

I.  Hebrews 5:11-14, 6:1-3

    A.  In the Christian walk there are basic, but vital teachings that must be understood and learned by all followers of Christ.

        1.  We must not, and usually will not move on in our Christian growth until these roots of our belief are firmly established in our lives.

            a.  These teachings were considered elementary by the Apostle Paul and are  the very foundation for maturity.

The Lordship of Christ

II.  Paul the Apostle said that we "must leave the elementary teachings about Christ"...(Christ means the "anointed one".)

    A.  Luke 6:46-49   One of the primary teachings about Christ is found in these verses - no one can really say the Jesus is Lord unless they "obey" and "do" what He says.

        1.  You don't have Jesus as your Lord if you don't obey Him.

        2.  "Lord" means boss, supreme in authority, controller.  If a person has been born again, then he/she will obey the one who saved them.  He/she would follow and obey the one who is supreme in authority.

        3.  The person who understands who the supreme in authority is has a firm and solid foundation.

III.  Why can we call Him Lord?

    A.  2 Corinthians 5:21   Jesus is our Lord because He is the one who made it possible for our sins to be removed.

        1.  Jesus was the one with the power to defeat sin and Satan and take back the authority man lost through Adam.

    B.  We call Jesus Lord because it glorifies God the Father when we acknowledge Jesus as Lord of all.  Philippians 2:6-11

IV.  The Lordship of Jesus must be a total sold-out attitude of heart.

    A.  Matthew 15:8, 22:36-38   Jesus is Lord, yes, but is He the Lord of "every" area of your life?

        1.  The person who has not given over everything in his life to Jesus does not understand the Lordship of Christ - it must be total!

    B.  Hosea 10:1-2   When the heart is deceitful or divided, then the Lord Jesus can not help that person in times of trouble, because to walk with Christ there must be agreement.

    C.  Revelation 12:10   If Jesus is Lord total Lord of your life then there is no accusation that the devil can bring against you.

V.  We are living up to the "New Covenant" when we have Jesus as Lord of our life.

    A.  Hebrews 12:24, Galatians 3:13-14   As a person in covenant relationship with God through Christ Jesus, we can expect the blessings of God to come to us - however, this comes through faith.

        1.  Matthew 6:25-34   All things that you need are provided as long as you have Jesus as Lord and seek after what He desires, and that is "righteousness."

"Faith In God"

(Take the Exaim: Quiz-Faith.txt)

I.  Faith’s Definition

A. Faith is a belief - a mental attitude.

1. It is being sure of what we hope for.

a.  Sure that it exists - that even though I cannot see it, it is there, it is a reality. Electricity is an example of an existence of something hoped for and certain of what we do not see - we know it exists because we see its results, but we cannot actually see electricity itself.

B.  Faith is action – faith does not exist without action.  Acts 6: 7

1.  Action to God’s word and direction gives evidence of faith..

II.  The Importance of Faith.

A.  Hebrews 11: 6   Faith is the very essence of the Christian life and the very foundation for which all is learned from God.

III.  The Source of Faith.

A.  John 3: 27, Ephesians 2: 8   Faith is a gift that God gives us so that we can understand and know Him.

B.  Romans 10: 17   God transmits faith to all who seek Him and hear His Word.

IV.  Who Has Faith?

            A.  Romans 12: 3, 2 Thessalonians 3: 2

2.  Not all people have faith.  It takes an action of a person’s will to accept salvation, but faith comes from hearing the Word of God.  When a person hears the salvation message and accepts it faith is imparted to that person in order for him/her to be born-again.

V.  Faith and Deeds

A.  James 2: 14-26  Faith requires obedience to God’s Word.

1.      God gives faith to believers and intends for them to be obedient and use it for good – theirs and others.

B.  Belief must become pure faith through actions.

C.  Deeds give strength to your faith – without deeds your faith is dead.  James 2: 22

VI.  Hindrance to Faith

            A.  Walking in the flesh.  Galatians 5: 5-6, 16-17, 19-23

1.      The things of the flesh destroy faith and brings condemnation and does not desire the Word of God which brings faith.

B.  Neglecting the Holy Spirit.  Galatians 6: 7-8

"Instructions About Baptisms"

(Take the Exam: Quiz-Baptism.txt)

I.                    Types of Baptisms.

A.    1 Corinthians 12:13  When a person is born again, they are immersed (baptized) into the body of Christ – the church.

B.     Acts 2:38, 1 Peter 3:18-22  Water baptism was and is the tangible means which gives evidence of a repentant heart and a changed mind that submits to God and obedience to His will.

C.    Matthew 3:11  Holy Spirit baptism is the immersion of the believer into the Holy Spirit who gives evidence of God’s approval of the repentant person.

II.                 Water Baptism – Obedience to Faith.

A.    Matthew 3:13-15  Jesus taught that it is proper to fulfill righteousness.

1.      This is an example of not only believing by faith, but it is action or faith with corresponding deeds. (James 2:18-24)

B.     Acts 2:38  The apostles taught that faith needed action – not only in repentance but also in the act of baptism.

C.    Matthew 28:19-20  Jesus wants the church to be obedient and call others to repentance and baptism.

III.               The Meaning and Purpose of Water Baptism.

A.    Baptism means to whelm, which means to turn upside down, to cover something, to engulf completely, to pass or go over something so as to bury or submerge.

1.      2 Corinthians 6:14-18  The person who has not given their life to God is immersed into the world, therefore, after a person gives their life to Jesus, God demands them to be immersed into Christ Jesus.  Water baptism is the immersion into Christ and the body of Christ.

2.      Water baptism means to wash or immerse yourself, by an act of your will, through faith into Christ Jesus by the outward sign of obedience to Christ – the water being the grave and the cleansing agent of the Word of God and the spiritual blood of Christ.

B.     Water baptism’s purpose is also to show ownership – it is the washing off of the old owner and the anointing of the new.  (Romans 6:1-18)

IV.              Water Baptism is a Point of Reference.

A.    Romans 6:1-4  When a person is obedient to Christ’s offer for an exchanged life (He took your sins and made you the righteousness of God in Him.2 Corinthians 5:21) and is baptized in water, the water becomes a point of reference and a physical reminder of the exchange that took place.

1.      Water baptism should be a powerful reminder to the believer of Whose they are and for Whom they live – Jesus.

V.                 Baptism in the Holy Spirit – The power of God.

A.    The baptism in the Holy Spirit is the stamp of God’s approval for a repentant person (Acts 2:38-39.)

B.     The baptism of the Holy Spirit enables the believer to witness with power as Jesus did – they become His witness – or like Him in power and life (Acts 1:8.)

VI.              Repentance is Essential for the Baptism in the Holy Spirit.

A.    Acts 2:38  The gift of the Holy Spirit is given to those who have a repentant heart and have turned from sin and Jesus.

1.      Just as forgiveness come through repentance, so also is the Holy Spirit given through repentance.

2.      Without repentance, God will not take up residency in the life of the believer.

VII.            The Holy Spirit is the Teacher.

A.    John 16:13-15  Since the Holy Spirit is the teacher and revealer of God’s Word, it is essential to be filled with and to have an intimate relationship with Him.

1.      The Holy Spirit reveals Jesus in His glory, power, and Lordship (John 14:26.)

VIII.         The Baptism of the Holy Spirit is for all people.

A.    Ephesians 5:18, Acts 2:38-39  Every person who will repent, turn from their sin, and be water baptized will receive the Holy Spirit, which is God’s resurrection power for a new life.

1.      It is the residency of the Holy Spirit that gives evidence of God in us.  Roma 8:10 (NIV) But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness. 11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you. 12 Therefore, brothers, we have an obligation--but it is not to the sinful nature, to live according to it. 13 For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live, 14 because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. [15] Or adoption}And by him we cry, "Abba, [15] Aramaic for Father}Father." 16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. 17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs--heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

IX.              How to receive the Baptism in the Holy Spirit.

A.    Repent of your sins.  Acts 2:38

B.     Let Jesus be Lord (boss) of your life.  Luke 6:46

C.  Ask Jesus to baptize you in the Holy Spirit (this asking means to ask for forgiveness, surrender to God’s will, and be converted from your old way of life to God’s way of life).  Matthew 3:11,  Luke 11:5 (NIV) Then he said to them, "Suppose one of you has a friend, and he goes to him at midnight and says, `Friend, lend me three loaves of bread, 6 because a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have nothing to set before him.' 7 "Then the one inside answers, `Don't bother me. The door is already locked, and my children are with me in bed. I can't get up and give you anything.' 8 I tell you, though he will not get up and give him the bread because he is his friend, yet because of the man's boldness [8] Or persistence}he will get up and give him as much as he needs. 9 "So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened. 11 "Which of you fathers, if your son asks for [11] Some manuscripts for bread, will give him a stone; or if he asks for}a fish, will give him a snake instead? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!"
